FLORIDA SENIOR SAFETY RESOURCE CENTER
What We Do
We accomplish the objectives described in our mission through education, assessment, and mobility counseling.
- Education – We provide seniors with information on age related changes that can affect their driving, pedestrian activities, use of public transit, and other means of transportation, as well as tips on ways to increase their safe mobility.
- Assessment – We evaluate vision, cognitive, and psychomotor abilities which are relevant to safe driving. For example, in vision, we conduct tests of visual acuity, peripheral vision, color vision, and contrast sensitivity. The latter has been found to be associated to involvement in car crashes. The evaluation of cognitive and psychomotor skills includes tests of visual-spatial ability, gait, and attention and memory. We also work with the Miami-Baptist Hospital Rehabilitation Center to provide a thorough evaluation of driving ability behind the wheel.
- Mobility Counseling – In addition to the evaluations mentioned, a mobility counselor at the Senior Safety Resource Center provides information to family members, caregivers, and clients on how to prepare for retirement from the road. This includes assisting the client in identifying the costs of using private transportation, identifying and accessing the most appropriate transportation options.
