Health in Aging Week
The first ever Center on Aging “Health in Aging” took place last September at the UM/East Carolina game on with a special visit from the elderly parents of the Ibis. They turned out to thank the Center on Aging for it’s important work and show everyone just how spry and active they are in their older years . A mid-week poster session at the Mental Health Hospital Center drew a big lunchtime crowd that got to view 30 posters displayed and presented by faculty members from various Schools across campuses. University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala did the honors when she introduced Tony Burns at the Lowe Art Museum for the first “Isabelle Gadsby Lectureship on Positive Aging.” The former CEO of Ryder talked about starting a new life in retirement-one of giving back to the community.
Then serious work began at the Aging in the Americas conference. Ministers of Health and senior aging officials from more than 15 Latin American and Caribbean countries attended the two day session. “Aging issues were brought to the table, and it provided an opportunity to share experiences across countries and regions about ways to address the very rapid growth in our aging population,” said Carl Eisdorfer, Ph.D, M.D., and Director of the Center on Aging.
Assistant U.S. Secretary for Aging, The Honorable Josefina Carbonell, was the special guest of honor at the formal dinner that wrapped up the international meeting.
