Caregiving

Research has shown that family caregiving is a significant factor in caring for older persons with debilitating conditions. An important part of social and health policy is to keep the elderly at home and out of long-term care institutions. However, there are major problems associated with the caregiving of older, frail, and demented family members. The economic costs of lost work productivity by caregivers are high. Caregiving is often the basis for serious emotional problems such as depression as well as physical illness, which could undermine the health and the ability of families providing care. We are working on programs that already have shown promise of effective intervention and prevention.

The REACH I research project Telephone Linked Computerized (TLC) System for Dementia Case is one example of the center's efforts in the area of telemedicine and human services.
